Berwick is a Border town situated right in the ‘top right hand corner’ of England. The Scottish Border is in fact just outside the town as you leave Berwick to the North (Carlisle is considerably further South!). Edinburgh is about 50 miles to the north. The town changed hands between the two countries thirteen times during its stormy past!   Whether or not Berwick should once again become a part of Scotland, the River Tweed becoming a natural border as it has in the past, is still a contentious issue.  Berwick dialect is a rich mixture of Geordie, Northumberland and Scots accents. Many will have travelled over the magnificent Stevenson railway viaduct as it curves over the Tweed estuary on the main East Coast railway line, and admired the wonderful views of the beautiful old town roofs tumbling gently towards the gleaming estuary. Perhaps they have been lucky enough even to spot the salmon fishermen drawing their nets at the turn of the tide. Easily accessible by road and rail, and in an area full of interest, Berwick is an ideal spot for a holiday break.

By Road

From the South follow the A1 (from Newcastle Ferry Port) until the junction with the A698 at East Ord. Turn right**. At the next roundabout turn left.  Continue into Tweedmouth under railway bridge to junction (‘DP Furniture Express ’ on right).  Fork left over bridge. At mini roundabout turn right into main shopping street (Marygate).  You will see the Guildhall ahead of you.  You are nearly there!  Detailed instructions on how to find 2, The Courtyard will be issued to you at the time of booking.  If approaching Berwick  from the West, proceed along the A698, crossing the A1 at East Ord.  Then follow instructions as from ** above.

From the North Follow A1 to the supermarket roundabout. Proceed straight on (A1167), and follow into the Town Centre, under the Scots Gate, finding the Guildhall straight ahead of you. If travelling from Rosyth Ferry Port, near Edinburgh, proceed via Forth Road bridge and Edinburgh bypass (A720) to A1. If approaching Berwick by boat from the East, consult the harbourmaster at Tweedmouth Dock, Tel:01289 307404/306042

By Air

From Edinburgh Airport, try the AA Route Planner
for excellent detailed road directions.  Alternatively there is a really helpful website at www.users.zetnet.co.uk/jcurry.  From Newcastle airport, take the A696 to Newcastle, then North on the A1.

By Rail

Timetables and tickets can be obtained from the internet or at railway stations. There is a taxi rank outside the station. To walk, proceed out of the station and straight ahead up to road. Turn right and left (Railway Street). Turn right down Castlegate and into the town centre under Scotsgate.

There is a lovely ‘scenic’ alternative route to the town centre for the pedestrian with a little time to spare: As you come out of the station take the footpath through the little red gate to the right of the car park down towards the river. Turn left along the riverside footpath and proceed until you reach the road bridge. Then you can either take the footpath up to the left up to the town centre, or you can continue under the road bridge and towards the Old Bridge. This delightful walk can then be continued by turning left into Bridge St and then straight ahead up the steep hill via West St. Alternatively, continue across the road at the old Bridge (one way traffic), and down along the old dockside past the Chandlery. Turn left through the Sandgate arch. Proceed up Hide Hill and towards Guildhall.

All long distance buses arrive in Golden Square.  Walk to T junction (away from bridge) and turn right into main shopping street (Marygate) - less than 5 minutes.
